A few weeks ago, I saw a large flock of Canada Geese heading North -- but what do they know? Silly geese.

The radio weather folks have been saying for several days now that "Spring is in the air!"

Today I saw my first Robin. Three, in fact. Now I believe it!

About 2 weeks ago I saw a flock of Robins and ... a Blue Bird on the Taconic State Parkway in Pleasant Valley. I've seen flocks of Robins in March (even Feb.) but never a Blue Bird so early in the year. Needless to say I was thinking to myself that this indeed was a harbinger of Spring. But I was sadly mistaken as the next day we had 8 inches if snow!!

A Bluebird! They are seldom seen nowadays. In my youth, they were quite common, but the pesky interloper Starlings, introduced in the 1800s, have seriously reduced their numbers. Starlings like the same nesting parameters as Bluebirds, and will drive a Bluebird off -- or even kill it and build its own nest right on top of the body!

Someone has developed a birdhouse that one can mount lower to the ground. Bluebirds will use it, but Starlings won't nest so close to the ground.
